This soft has almost everything users need to create CDs and DVDs. It can burn any data on CD-R/CD-RW/DVD+R/DVD-R/DVD+RW/DVD-RW/DVD-RAM/Blu-Ray/HD-DVD, including double layer media. It can create audio CDs, data CDs, MP3 CDs, Video and data DVDs, Blu-Ray and HD-DVD discs. CDBurnerXP Pro also includes the feature to burn and create ISOs or to create bootable discs. It burns on-the-fly and includes buffer-underrun protections. Moreover, this freeware should not disappoint users since its interface is similar to the Nero one. CDBurnerXP Pro is an excellent tool. Just get it !

Brasero is a free disc-burning program for Linux. It's an Open Source equivalent to Nero Burning Room or Easy Media Creator : all that (and much more), for free ! Brasero is now the default application to burn CD/DVD in Ubuntu (since 2008). Brasero is very intuitive and user-friendly. It can burn data CDs and DVDs, audio CDs, MP3 (or OGG or FLAC) CDs, erase CDs and DVDs, burn CD and DVD images, it supports multisession and can burn on the fly... To create a Video DVD, you just have to create an ISO image of your film first and then burn the image. Quite simple, no ? You can then read your DVD with your home theater... A very good burning tool !

Just as Brasero (see above for our comments) K3b is a free disc-burning program for Linux. K3b stands fot KDE Burn Baby Burn. This free program is very complete and allows to perform most CD/DVD burning tasks you can imagine. It can burn data CDs and DVDs, audio CDs, MP3 (or OGG, WMA and FLAC) CDs, VCDs, mixed mode CDs, video DVDs. It can create an audio CD from a set of audio files, copy a CD/DVD, erase CD-RW/DVD-RW/DVD+RW. It supports multisession, can burn on the fly, read audio CDs, allows for the authoring of video CDs or video DVDs, can burn CD and DVD images. K3b supports burning on Bluray/DVD-R/DVD+R/DVD-RW/DVD+RW discs. It provides also CD ripping, DVD ripping and DivX/XviD encoding features. Mindblowing, no ? At last, K3b provides a nice graphical user interface that makes it easy to use. Really, I love this tool !

It can create and burn CD and DVD ISO images, supports multisession and has buffer-underrun protections. It has also a CD ripping and encoding feature that allows to rip the songs of an audio CD and encode them to WMA, MP3, OGG, FLAC... A good tool.

cdrtools (known before as cdrecord) is an application to burn CDs and DVDs. It's a cross-platform program that functions as a console-based burning program. It is then easier to use together with a graphical user interface (front-end). As the author of the program says, the goal for cdrtools development is to provide a free suite of programs for writing CD/DVD/BD media. cdrtools allows the creation of audio, data and mixed CDs. It burns on CD-R, CD-RW, DVD-R, DVD-RW, DVD+R, DVD+RW (single and dual layer DVDs) and Blu-Ray discs. This free soft (open source) supports multisession, can create and burn CD and DVD ISO images or erase CD-RW/DVD-RW/DVD+RW. As for the software that can use cdrtools and serve as graphical front-ends, there are Infra Recorder (see below) and cdrtfe for Windows or K3b (see above), GnomeBaker and X-CD-Roast for Linux.
